The Piñatarama

Among contemporary character design and popular tradition.
Surprise, game, design and tradition are some of the pillars of this exhibition. Piñatarama for letting us be surprised by the unexpected result of the interpretation by Mexican artisans of these 25 characters, created by designers and illustrators from around the world. Thus providing a special facility where the designer  pinatas  reflect this aspect of contemporary concoctions, juxtaposition and appropriation of an object culturally rooted in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America. The pinata is associated with the Latino culture, but historians point to Asia (especially China) as its actual point of origin. It is assumed that the famous traveler Marco Polo’s visit to that nation, he saw how the Chinese created colorful animal figures covered with paper, which is hung with ornaments, and were used in the New Year celebrations. As a good observer, Polo brought Europe the idea of these early piñatas. Although housed in various regions of their religious significance, today, the piñata is considered a symbol of fun and entertainment.

Piñatarama is a joint project of Cecilia Meade, David Gamez and Vertigo Gallery.
